後者が丁寧なのは、直接の要望から相手の能力や意思を尋ねる疑問文へと距離をとっているから
さらに遠く距離をとって「過去形のCould/Would ?」なら丁寧度は上がる。

→ I wonderは独り言なので、相手への要望から極端に離れた独り言であるため丁寧さを勝ち得ている

相手へのプレッシャーを入念に下げる工夫がある
“I was wondering“, this is a very polite expression, isn’t it?

What is the nuance of “get on” here?
It simply means progressing. “How is she progressing?“
And we can also say, “getting along“.
