speculate 確たる証拠なしで言う
refuse 断る、拒否する
Could you explain the difference between “motive” and “motivation“?
I think it’s quite difficult, actually.
But “motive” tends to refer to a specific reason for doing something.
And it’s often a little bit hidden like in this case.
“Hmm we’re not sure of the kidnapper’s motives”.
Whereas “motivation” is more something that pushes you.
Like students need motivation to study.
Athletes need motivation to keep training, for example.
That’s right.
And because of that, “motive” is also used a lot for crimes.
“What was the motive behind the crime”?
motive: 何か特定の行動に移るその理由。犯罪によく使われる単語
motivation: 自分の気持ちを盛り上げる、何かの行為に駆り立てる「やる気」
