DIALOGUE – 会話全文
– Hi, Martha. What are you watching on your smartphone?
– This is a selfie movie I took of my sister and me.
– Can I see? Oh, she looks like you.
– Everyone says that. Do you have any brothers or sisters, Sam?
– I have three brothers.
– Three brothers! Wow, it must be tough for your parents.
– I suppose so. They’re kind but strict.
– I wish I had a brother.
– Really? Why?
– My friend Misuzu has a younger brother, and they have a great relationship.
– You have a sister and get along well with her, right?
– Yes, but I’d like a cool brother, too.

→ 時表現をバックシフトしている

過去形の持つ距離感（過ぎ去った遠くの出来事）
＝ 過去を表さない以下の表現となる
I hoped you could lend me some money.
お金をいくらか貸していただけるとありがたいのですが。
→hopedにして「今」から離れることで『ほんの少しでも』と控えめにしている

クリスなら直せると思うなぁ。
→couldも上記文と同じ。過去形にして距離を取り控えめにしている。
